The hardened lava extends some 4 miles (6 kilometers) from the cinder cone, and is about 100 feet (30 meters) thick.
The surrounding land rises to 1, 000 meters (3, 000 feet) east and west of the valley, and high-elevation, volcanic cinder cones dot the rim.
